Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and the birth of the site.

The birth of the site and the birth of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, might be linked to each other.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga was the first vice-president of Kenya, between 1963 and 1966. He became a later eminent opposition leader and he has written the book, Not Yet Uhuru.

His home and eventually his tomb is at the homestead, the Kang’o KaJaramogi in Bondo (in Siaya County). It is said that the site was later turned into a complex of museums and mausoleum following his death in 1994.

The family graveyard is located close to it where his wife, the late children and other relatives are buried. It is a memorial and a national place with importance.

There are houses of Jaramogi and his wives and one of the wives house has been converted to a museum.

The Jaramogi Memorial Museum was turned into one of the houses, which contains his shoes and his famous fly-whisks.

Inside the museum you’ll find:

• Artifacts of Luo traditions and animal mounts (buffalo heads, leopard and cheetah).
• It is an exhibition place of his political life and the independence period in Kenya.
